In 2024, in collaboration with Gansam, Junglim and Nikken Sekkei, the studio took part
in a 10-week competition to design a new international airport and masterplan in South Korea.
Situated in Gadeokdo, southwest of Busan, the site is nestled amidst rich natural landscapes,
with a breathtaking mountain backdrop which characterises the whole archipelago.
Our proposed design, The Wave, celebrates the site’s intrinsic connection to its extraordinary
natural setting. Inspired by the rippling waves of the ocean, the airport emerges
as if from the sea’s surface.
The terminal’s undulating roof surface radiates from the airport’s central point,
embodying the fluidity and movement of water. Covered with solar voltaic panels,
the rippled roof generates renewable energy, supporting the airport’s sustainability ambitions
for years to come. Infused with greenery, natural light and flowing water, The Wave would echo
its surroundings and provide passengers with an unexpectedly calming travel experience.
The design aims for the airport to be more than just a transportation hub, but rather
a symbol of business, culture, and tourism. Gadeokdo New Airport and its masterplan
could serve as an extraordinary gateway, capturing Busan’s pivotal role as the hub for
international arrival and departure to Korea.
