Some exciting news: Heatherwick Studio is designing The Annexe, a group of historic market buildings at London’s Smithfield.
A place of trade for centuries, Smithfield is now synonymous with its evocative Victorian market halls. The Annexe’s triangular site was once home to the fish market, as well as storage and engine spaces.
We are very proud to be partnering with the City of London Corporation, General Projects and Esselco Group to revive these buildings, which have been out of use for decades.
A new independent food market will open in 2028, before a boutique hotel, shops, restaurants and a green space for community events follow in 2030. This bustling destination will sit opposite the new London Museum, as part of the wider masterplan for this historic area.
“West Smithfield Annexe has always been a place of making, exchange and public life, so it’s a real privilege for us to be involved in imagining its future,” says Eliot Postma, Partner & Group Leader at Heatherwick Studio. “This is a project rooted in London’s heritage but looking firmly forward. We’re excited about what it could become.”
