Heatherwick Studio has designed a ceramic cup to capture the spirit of last year’s Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism.

Led by Thomas Heatherwick as General Director, the Biennale explored how buildings and cities shape people’s emotions and experiences. This free cultural event embraced mass citizen participation,
attracting more than 800,000 visitors.

A distinctive eye formed the Biennale’s visual identity, urging people to look more closely at the places around them. The eye has been integrated into the side of the vessel, which is of an intimate size commonly used for drinks such as soju – a Korean spirit – or espresso.

Created in partnership with Seoul Metropolitan Government and Kwangjuyo, one of Korea’s leading ceramic brands, the cup combines traditional craftsmanship with a playful design intended to spark conversation.

Thomas Heatherwick, Founder and Design Director of Heatherwick Studio, said:

“This special cup is a symbol of people coming together. It has a beautiful, curious eye designed into the side, reminding us to keep looking at buildings and talking to each other about how they make us feel. Because that’s how change will come.”

The Seoul Biennale Cup has been produced in a set of two – perfect for a shared drink. The set is available internationally through Kwangjuyo’s global online store, bringing a piece of Seoul’s culture to audiences worldwide.
