The transformation of Nodeul Island in Seoul has taken its first steps today, as renewed waterfront areas begin to open to the public.

Overseen by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, new ecological gardens, playgrounds, picnic areas, a large-scale media installation and a 1.5km walking trail are now accessible to visitors, bringing new life to overlooked parts of the island and encouraging people to spend time closer to the water. The new spaces include the ‘In Between Garden’, a sculptural tiered gateway that affords visitors changing perspectives of the Han River as they descend its steps.

The waterfront areas represent the first phase in Nodeul Island’s redevelopment, as part of ‘Soundscape’, Heatherwick Studio’s longer-term vision to reimagine the island into a new place for culture and recreation.

Neil Hubbard, Partner and Group Leader at Heatherwick Studio, said:

“While the wider transformation of Nodeul Island develops, the Seoul Metropolitan Government were keen for Seoulites to start exploring the island as soon as possible. Together, we identified areas that could be enhanced in a short period of time, through both subtle improvements as well as some joyful new interventions, to allow people back onto an island they love.

“Even these early interventions reveal the potential of Nodeul as a place to slow down, gather and experience the Han River in a new way.”

Designed to celebrate Seoul’s unique creative culture, Soundscape will reconnect people with nature, music and each other through immersive landscapes inspired by Seoul’s mountains and the patterns of sound waves.

At the heart of the island will be a dramatic elevated aerial park and walkway, formed of seven floating, petal-like islets that offer restful areas, art and music experiences, and spectacular views across the city and the riverbank.

Hubbard continued:

“The newly opened waterfront spaces are the foundation for the next phase of Soundscape, which is due to start construction soon. Some of the elements subtly echo our overall design concept, and will really sing together once Nodeul’s transformation is complete.

“We hope that as people return to the island, they will be inspired and excited for what is still to come.”

Nodeul Island forms part of Heatherwick Studio’s growing presence in South Korea. Thomas Heatherwick was appointed General Director of the 5th Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism in 2025, and the studio continues to develop a number of major projects in the country, including the redevelopment for Hanwha Galleria, the reimagining of COEX Convention Centre, and its first residential project in the country, Daegyo Apartments.
