Design story
“In the realm of sleep, the digital revolution has been wreaking havoc,” divorcing us from our natural rhythms of rest, says the studio’s Design Director, Thomas Heatherwick.
The design team studied the setting sun as the archetype of restful light. Produced in pressed glass, the light-emitting element of Wake is a metaphor for the solar sphere, its gentle fade mimicking sunset.
The concentric ridges of the bulb and base represent the ripples of a sunset across a body of water. The ridges encourage the user to rotate the base, fading the light up or down.
The design avoided the use of metal, plastic and bright screens. The base is handmade in ceramic, inspired by Asian craft traditions.
